Donald,

SGI's that come with a floppy drive more than likely use a 21MB Floptical Drive
which eats 3m (among others) 21 meg floptical diskettes. The good news is that
the drive can read, write, and format both 1.44meg Mac and DOS diskettes as
well as 21meg Mac and Dos flopticals. There is no special SGI format I'm aware
of for the diskettes although you can access a raw diskette as a standard UNIX
device for tar, cpio etc.

i.e ( tar cvf /dev/rdsk/fds0d3.3.5 {/your_files}) for 720K diskette
    ( tar cvf /dev/rdsk/fds0d3.3.5 {/your_files}) High Density 1.44m diskette
    ( tar cvf /dev/rdsk/fds0d3.3.5.20m {/your_files}) to 20m floptical


 Although this seems to be rarely done.

My company is going to be getting a demo of a new SGI Impact system and
among the software we'll be looking at is Lightwave. (I've been looking
foward to this for months)

Does anyone know what disk format SGI uses for floppies?
Is it IBM's format (most likely) or their own?

I would like to take in a scene file and some objects to try out and I
need to know how to get them into the SGI.

Also, if, in case we get Alias Animator instead, will I be able to convert
objects from Lightwave format and if so, how much translates? (surfaces,
color, image maps) I know of translators that run on NT but what of SGI?
